Reading: To provide a wide range of reading experiences and to empower the children with the skills and strategies to become confident, independent readers. Reading and books will be closely connected to written and oral language experiences.
The book your child brings home each night has been read and discussed with their reading group. Story discussion is one of the most important aspects of reading as it reinforces understanding, so encourage your child to tell you what the story is about before you read it together. In fact, discussing is better than reading it if your child is tired or you run out of time.
Writing:
The children will write everyday.
They will understand that writing is for an audience and for a purpose.
They will learn to write through teacher modelling – newsboards, guided writing, recording the class ideas and being read to.
The children will be grouped for instruction to meet the wide range of needs.
Maths: The main focus is on numeracy – understanding numbers and how they are made up, recognising patterns in numbers and being able to understand your process for solving a problem. Again, discussion is the key to better understanding. There is a lot of language involved in maths, both terminology and problem solving, so the more you can talk together the better. Here are some examples; more than, less than, greater than, fewer than, plus, subtract or take away, equal to, tens, ones, etc.
Topics: These are usually science or social studies based and always overflow into reading and writing. The main focus is to encourage the children to be active learners – to want to find out more and to know how and where to do it. It is wonderful when the children are enthusiastic to share relevant information or resources they may have from home with the rest of the class.
News and Current Affairs: This is an important part of oral language development. The Y1 children are encouraged to bring something interesting to the class that they can talk about. Y2 children, and any Y1s who wish to, are to bring a current event that is of interest to them. It maybe from the newspaper or local paper, a magazine or book or even photograghs of somewhere interesting they have been. Make sure it is something they can speak confidently to the class about. Mondays they may share something personal with their group. The children are given a day for their other news.
House Keeping: · Please make sure all permission slips are returned promptly. · Assembly begins at 2.20pm on a Monday. · We prefer no toys at school unless it is special news. · Reading folders are to be at school every day with homework book, Reading Log and current reading book.
